Make-Up Air System Project for Vocational School Culinary Arts Lab
PJM Mechanical Contractors, Inc. recently completed the installation of a large make-up air system as part of the renovation of a Central New Jersey technical school’s culinary arts lab. The project was on a rigid schedule to accommodate facility needs while the school year was in session.
A makeup air system serves a key role in commercial kitchens and cafeterias, replacing air drawn out by powerful kitchen exhaust equipment and providing heating and cooling. PJM utilized 3D building information modeling to ensure that the new air handling unit and all hoods, ductwork, ceilings, lighting, piping, and exterior roof supports would fit with precision. Architectural features of the 1,800 square foot culinary arts space included suspended cloud ceilings and exposed, polished stainless-steel hoods and ductwork.
PJM was diligent in making sure materials and equipment arrived at the jobsite on time and were installed in accordance with the schedule. Following installation came startup of individual equipment including air handler and exhaust fans, followed by air balancing and detailed functional testing with the building automation system to verify proper sequence of operation. Alarm and failure took place to ensure their proper operation
