Welding Fume Safety

September 25, 2019

Welding, cutting and brazing exposes workers and others to hazardous metal fumes and gas byproducts. In the short term, exposure to these fumes and gases can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, dizziness and nausea. Prolonged exposure can lead to lung damage, various types of cancer, stomach ulcers, kidney damage, and nervous system damage. In confined spaces, an accumulation of fumes or gases can lead to suffocation or asphyxiation.

To reduce exposure to welding fumes, welding surfaces must be cleaned of any coating that could potentially create toxic exposure, such as solvent residue or paint. Ventilation should be employed wherever possible, and workers should be aware that welding outdoors or in an open workspace does not guarantee adequate ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation systems such as fume hoods, fume extractor guns and vacuum nozzles can be effective, as can portable or flexible exhaust systems. OSHA regulates welding in confined spaces, where ventilation is required. If work practices and ventilation do not adequately exposures to safe levels, respiratory protection must be used.

PJM Mechanical's expert team of certified welders receives continual health and safety training, and we adhere to all OSHA guidelines, standards and regulations to protect our workers from the adverse health effects of these harmful fumes.
